The Baarah Island Council in Haa Alifu Atoll has announced plans to establish a museum dedicated to preserving and showcasing the island’s rich cultural and historical heritage.
The Council has confirmed that construction of the museum will commence this year. This decision was announced during a meeting with officials from the Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture, and Heritage, who focused on the protection and preservation of the island's historical artefacts and heritage. The meeting was also attended by Adam Naseer Ibrahim, the Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture, and Heritage.
Baarah Council President Sofath Mohamed disclosed that funds had been allocated in the Council's budget for this project and that the necessary financial resources had been secured. During the discussion, council members outlined their ongoing efforts to safeguard and preserve the island's cultural heritage and historical artefacts.
Speaking at the meeting, Minister Ibrahim expressed the ministry's commitment to supporting the museum development project. He also took the opportunity to enquire about the island's cultural heritage and historical artefacts, encouraging council members to document and preserve information regarding these treasures.
After the meeting, Minister Ibrahim toured some of Baarah’s historical sites. Among these are items related to Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu al-Auzam, the leader of the rebellion against Portuguese colonial rule, ultimately achieving independence. The Portuguese colonised the Maldives in 1558 and ruled for 15 years. Historical documents indicate that the renowned vessel "Kalhuohfummi,” used by Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu and his forces during the resistance was constructed on Baarah.
During his visit to Haa Alifu Atoll, Minister Ibrahim also travelled to Utheemu and Thakandhoo as part of efforts to develop a comprehensive plan for the conservation and preservation of cultural and heritage artefacts associated with Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu.
