Gov’t Agencies Looks to Boost Business Opportunities in Agriculture

The relevant government agencies have held discussions to explore ways in boosting business opportunities for local entrepreneurs in agriculture.

The discussions were held between the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Maldives Industrial Development Free Zone Company (MIDFZ) and Agronet.

According to the Ministry, discussions were centered around facilitating the marketing of farmers' produce at cheaper prices.

The joint efforts of various agencies will facilitate the opportunities available to farmers in this sector, increasing their income and improving their livelihoods, the Ministry said.

The Ministry said that discussions were also held to explore ways to encourage the role of youth in the agricultural sector and to provide them with the necessary support and empowerment.

The Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Dr Mariyam Mariya had earlier admitted to the many challenges facing the field of agriculture in the country despite several initiatives by this Administration to develop and expand the sector. The lack of adequate technical information for local farmers is one the biggest challenges to environmentally friendly farming, Minister Dr Maria had said.

A special collaboration has been launched with the Maldives National University (MNU) to help the government achieve its goal of developing the agricultural industry. Advanced level courses in agriculture have already been launched and diploma and degree level courses are expected through the establishment of a special faculty.
