Fish Exports Up 35 Percent in First Two Months

Maldives fisheries has made a strong start to 2025 with exports up considerably in the first two months, central bank, Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) figures have shown.

According to MMA’s monthly statistics report, fish exports in the first two months of the year were up by 35.1 percent in comparison to the same period last year.

The figures showed that the country had exported 14,222.6 metric tonnes of fish in the first two months of 2025 compared to the 10,526.7 metric tonnes the previous year.

The MMA report said the volume of exports of almost all major fish products had increased during the period.

Maldives exported 10,402.9 metric tonnes of Skipjack Tuna, significantly up from the 6,466.3 metric tonnes last year, while Yellowfin Tuna exports were slightly up from 2,420.7 metric tonnes to 2,468.2 metric tonnes in the first two months of 2025.

However, canned or pouched fish products were down from 1,306.9 metric tonnes to 750.1 metric tonnes this year.

This Administration since taking over, has initiated significant efforts to enhance and diversify the country’s fisheries industry. The biggest achievement to date has been to settle payments to fishermen within 48 hours, which has coincided with the increase in the volume of fish exports.
