Foundation Stone Laid for Olympic-Size Swimming Pool

The foundation stone for the Maldives’ first Olympic-size swimming pool, being developed by the Swimming Association of the Maldives has officially been laid.

The foundation stone was laid by Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu, President of the Swimming Association of the Maldives Mohamed Abdul Sattar, philanthropist Hussain ‘Champa’ Afeef, who donated the international-standard swimming pool, and Aminath Sajan, the first Maldivian swimmer to win a medal in an international competition.

The Olympic-size swimming pool is housed within the Swimming Complex currently under construction. The four-storey swimming complex will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. The complex will feature a 50-metre pool and a 25-metre pool as well as training facilities and high jump area. The complex is expected to accommodate up to 1,500 spectators.

The swimming pool project is being carried out by High Rising Construction Pvt Ltd. The Swimming Association expects the work to be completed by November this year.
