Maldives’ New Envoy to IRENA Presents Credentials

Maldives’ newly appointed envoy to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has presented credentials to the agency chief, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Friday.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Ambassador of Maldives to the United Arab Emirates, Mohamed Hussain Shareef as the country’s new envoy to IRENA.

The Ministry said Ambassador Shareef presented his Letter of Credence to Francesco La Camera, Director General of IRENA, in an official ceremony held at the agency’s Headquarters in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

During the ceremony, the Ambassador conveyed appreciation of the Maldives government for IRENA’s role in advancing renewable energy initiatives and recognised IRENA’s technical assistance, support and contributions to Maldives.

Ambassador Shareef further expressed commitment to strengthening the cooperation with IRENA and work towards achieving the renewable energy goals of the Maldivian Government.

Director General La Camera welcomed the Ambassador to his new role and reiterated IRENA’s commitment to supporting the Maldives.

IRENA is an intergovernmental organisation, officially established in 2009. At present IRENA consists of 169 Member States.

The Maldives has been an active member of IRENA since its formation, including in the capacity of Vice Chair of the Assembly of IRENA, following the elections in 2013.

In October 2017, the inaugural meeting of the Renewable Island Energy (IRIE) was also held in the Maldives.
