Local councils across the Maldives have praised President Dr Mohamed Muizzu for his decision to ban entry of Israeli passports into the Maldives, describing the move as a “courageous and historic” decision.
The President on Tuesday ratified the Third Amendment to the Maldives Immigration Act, following its passed by the Parliament at its 20th sitting of the first session of the year. The move has garnered international attention, with scores commending the Maldivian government for the bold step.
The amendment introduces a new provision to the Immigration Act, expressly prohibiting the entry of individuals holding Israeli passports into the territory of the Republic of Maldives. The ratification reflects the government’s firm stance in response to the continuing atrocities and ongoing acts of genocide committed by Israel against the Palestinian people.
While local councils are expressing their gratitude to the President in statements issued following the announcement, the statements commonly noted that Maldivians have long called to close the country’s doors to those who are openly committing inhuman atrocities against the Palestinian people. Although no such decision has been taken by any previous government, President Muizzu went ahead with the decision despite international pressure by prioritising to the voice of the people, the councils noted.
The councils further said that the Maldives, despite being a small nation, has set a powerful example to the world by standing up against inhumanity. Councils expressed gratitude to President Muizzu and the Parliament members for facilitating the amendment.

Many hailed the Maldives as an example in advocating for the rights of the Palestinian people, while others described the President’s decision as bold and courageous, and called on other nations to adopt similar measures. Observers noted that while the Maldives relies heavily on tourism, the government’s willingness to take such a decision that may impact tourism demonstrates the Maldives’ strong commitment to protect human dignity and uphold human rights over economic interests.
The President has consistently championed the rights of the Palestinian people in the international arena. He has strongly condemned Israel's inhuman actions and spoken out in favor of the Palestinian people in all international forums he has participated in so far. The Maldives is also participating in ongoing legal cases filed against Israel in international courts.
