President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has held discussions with officials from popular social media platform TikTok, focusing on expanding digital services in the Maldives. The discussions took place during a meeting held at the President’s Office on Tuesday.
During the meeting, both parties explored potential avenues for collaboration to enhance TikTok’s services in the Maldives.
Speaking at the meeting, the President shared his vision for the Maldives’ digital transformation with the TikTok delegation. The delegation shared how the platform can support the realisation of that vision. Both the President and the TikTok delegation expressed optimism about future cooperation.
The visiting TikTok delegation also held separate talks with senior officials from the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade. The Ministry said their meeting with the TikTok delegation centred on opening new opportunities for digital monetisation or revenue generation for content shared on TikTok.
Establishing a creator economy in the Maldives is a presidential pledge of President Muizzu. While the government is discussing ways to generate revenue through online platforms, Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has also noted that there are a significant amount of online content creators in the Maldives, adding that various social media platforms are a means of generating income.
