Tradian Now Fully Operational as Maldives Advances Digital Trade Integration

The government has formally commenced operations on 'Tradian', a national single-window platform designed to streamline import and export procedures. Initially introduced last September, the system is now fully operational, offering businesses a centralised digital gateway for trade-related services. Officials expect the platform's adoption to enhance efficiency and eliminate administrative bottlenecks, providing a smoother process for those engaged in international commerce.

The rollout of Tradian marks a significant step in President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's digitalisation agenda, which seeks to improve trade infrastructure and expand accessibility for local businesses. Developed in consultation with economic experts and business sector stakeholders, the platform's design reflects industry needs, ensuring a seamless transition to digital trade facilitation.

Government approval for Tradian came during a cabinet meeting on 2 February, with an initial launch planned for 20 April. With the platform now in active use, authorities have mandated that, effective 1 June, all import and export transactions must be conducted exclusively through Tradian.

As businesses adjust to the transition, the Maldives Customs Service has begun integrating key services into the system, including the registration of shipping agents and freight forwarders, foreign-going vessel registration, submission of vessel arrival details (ETA/ETD), and submission of sea cargo manifests. Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has also incorporated its foreign vessel registration processes into Tradian, streamlining the submission of arrival details and cargo import manifests.

Relevant agencies have acknowledged the need for a structured adjustment period. Businesses not yet registered on Tradian, according to the customs authority, will still be permitted to submit cargo manifests and vessel arrival information through existing channels until 31 May, allowing time for full integration.

The development and implementation of Tradian were facilitated through TradeNet Maldives Corporation Ltd, a key entity leading trade digitalisation efforts. Government officials highlight that beyond modernising operations, the platform is expected to optimise workflows, reduce bureaucratic inefficiencies, and enhance international trade processes for Maldivian businesses.
