President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has emphasised that it is the duty of educated individuals, regardless of their field of expertise, to address societal challenges, asserting that collective action is key to resolving these issues and fostering societal reform.
During his address at the 2025 convocation ceremony of the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM), held on Saturday evening, the President insisted that without such sincere and unified efforts and commitment, rectifying the current situation would be impossible.
He cited the Holy Qur’an as a guiding example, reminding all educated individuals of their obligation to impart knowledge, wisdom, and ethical values.
"Now is the time to ask yourselves. After working so hard to get to this point what is your responsibility as students? Knowledge is given by Allah. Knowledge is acquired through hard work. But with that knowledge comes great responsibility,” the President said.
Addressing parents in attendance, the President urged them to encourage their children to pursue higher education. He also called on educational institutions to strive for academic excellence, noting that a united endeavour would be instrumental in recalibrating the nation's moral compass.
President Dr Muizzu further pledged to increase investment in the University, assuring that issues related to infrastructure and resources would be addressed.
Saturday’s convocation marked a milestone in the nation’s higher education sector, as a higher education institution conferred an honorary doctorate for the first time. The honorary degree was awarded to Sheikh Ismail Mohamed, in recognition of his 50 years of dedicated service to Arabic and Islamic education. The degree was conferred by President Dr Muizzu himself.
The President also presented awards and certificates to outstanding graduates.
The Islamic University of Maldives was officially established on 9 July 2015, following a presidential charter signed by the then-President, which elevated the former Kulliyah to university status. This year, 900 students graduated from the institution.
