Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Abdulla Khaleel has moved to distance the Maldives from the United Nations (UN) General Assembly resolution on cooperation between the UN and the Council of Europe insisting that it has no bearing on the island nation.
Minister Dr Khaleel comments were in response to a local media report suggesting that Maldives had voted in favour of a UN resolution on religious freedom.
In a post on X, the Minister clarified that the resolution first moved in 2000, has since been renewed every year since 2004.
He also explained that this resolution is one on cooperation between the UN and the Council of Europe in various fields, adding that all Maldivian governments have been in support of this resolution, as it has no direct relevance to the Maldives.
The Minister also pointed out that Maldives would continue to submit formal reservations to any resolutions that are legally binding if they are in direct contradiction to its religious and cultural beliefs.
Minister Dr Khaleel also urged local media outlets against spreading misinformation which would lead to confusion and misunderstandings among the public.
