Tourism Revenue Receives Significant Boost as Purple Patch Continues

The sustained increase in tourist arrivals to the Maldives so far this year has resulted in a significant boost in tourism revenue, Ministry of Tourism and Environment figures showed.

According to official figures, 764,229 tourists have holidayed in the Maldives as of 19 April which is 7.3 percent more than the 712,500 recorded during the same period last year.

So far this month, 131,811 tourists have visited the Maldives which is an increase of 21.5 percent over the same period last year.

The number of tourist arrivals continues to increase with an average of more than 7,000 tourists visiting the Maldives daily.

The continued increase in tourist arrivals has as expected, resulted in a significant boost in tourism revenue so far this year.

According to the Ministry of Finance and Planning, the island nation has crossed USD 214 million in revenue through tourism including tourism goods and services tax (TGST), green tax, departure tax and Airport Development Fee (ADF) in February and March this year. This is 12.4 percent more than the revenue generated through tourism during the same period in 2024.

As expected most tourists spent their holidays in resorts with 70.1 percent of total arrivals followed by guest houses with 24.4 percent. Just three percent of tourists chose tourist hotels while safaris reported 2.5 percent holidaymakers.

Maldives in 2024, witnessed the highest number of tourist arrivals in a single year in its 52 year tourism history.

According to tourism figures, a total of 2,047,435 tourists had holidayed in the Maldives in 2024. This is a nine percent increase from the 1،878،543 tourists from 2023.

This marks the first time Maldives has welcomed two million tourists to its shores in a calendar year.

The government is now aiming to better last year’s figure by welcoming 2.3 million tourists by the end of 2025.
