President Pledges Special Attention to Thalassaemia Patient Needs

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the government will prioritise addressing the needs of thalassaemia patients. He made this statement during a meeting with the thalassaemia community held Monday at the President's Office.

During the discussion, community representatives acknowledged the government's efforts to listen to their concerns and actively seek solutions. The forum also provided an opportunity for them to present additional needs directly to the President.

A key request from the thalassaemia community was that the development of the Thalassaemia Hospital should incorporate their input, ideas, and vision. They emphasised the importance of inclusive decision-making, calling for policies related to thalassaemia to be shaped through active community participation.

The community also urged that the Maldives Blood Service (MBS) be developed into a comprehensive and coordinated system capable of serving the entire nation. They requested closer collaboration between the service and patients, and provided detailed information to support their case.

Representatives highlighted that this is the first government to include specific provisions for children with thalassaemia in its manifesto. They expressed their willingness to fully support the establishment of inclusive, patient-centred policies.

In response, the President assured the community that the issues raised would be thoroughly reviewed. He acknowledged the value of patient participation in policy-making and committed to fostering that involvement. The President also pledged that his administration would work to create pathways for thalassaemia patients to receive complete treatment while remaining in the Maldives.

The President affirmed the significance and validity of the concerns shared, and committed to taking concrete steps towards resolving them.
