Parliament Passes Amendments to Sports Act to Boost Development

The Parliament on Monday passed amendments to the Maldives Sports Act, aimed at bringing about development to the sports sector and enhancing opportunities for Maldivian athletes.

The bill was originally proposed by the government and sponsored by the Member of Parliament, Abdul Latheef Mohamed, in November 2024. It was approved during the 26th sitting of the first session of 2025, with revisions to the original bill.

The proposed amendments to the Sports Act were moved by Member of Parliament, Ahmed Thoriq, and unanimously approved by the relevant committee last month.

Presenting the committee report on the bill, Member of Parliament Asma Rasheed said the bill was discussed with all stakeholders at the Ministry of Sports, Fitness and Recreation. She added that the bill was also opened for public comment, and discussed at a public forum held in February this year. The forum was attended by representatives from national sports associations, clubs, and academies.

While the amendments to the bill were passed by a majority in Parliament at Monday’s sitting, they are expected to bring advancement to the sports sector, and provide opportunities for Maldivian athletes. The ratification of the bill will also streamline the process of sending local athletes abroad for training and development.
