Parliament on Monday sent to its Government Oversight Committee for review the appointment of Dr. Mohamed Asim as Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Article 129 (D) of the Constitution stipulates that Ministerial appointments require Parliament endorsement.

The matter was sent to the Government Oversight Committee as per Article 171 (B) of the Regulation on the Proceedings of the Parliament.

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom appointed Dr. Mohamed Asim as the new Minister of Foreign Affairs on July 13.

Dr. Asim has most recently served as the Maldivian High Commissioner in Bangladesh. He holds a PhD in Political Science and International Relations from the Australian National University, and a Master of Arts degree in International Affairs from the California State University.

Dr. Asim has served extensively in the Foreign Service, having held the posts of Maldivian High Commissioner to a number of countries including Sri Lanka, the United Kingdom and Pakistan. He has also served as the Maldivian Ambassador for European Communities, and as Ambassador-at-large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Prior to his career in the Foreign Service, Dr. Asim has also held senior positions at the President’s Office.

The new appointment followed the resignation of Dunya Maumoon from the post of Foreign Minister on July 5.
