Fisheries Minister Stresses Need for Women’s Participation in Mariculture Industry

Mariculture is not solely a field for men; it is also essential for women to participate in this field, Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam has said.

The Minister made the remark while speaking at the closing ceremony of the Marine Hatchery Skills Development Programme. Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister highlighted significant efforts to develop mariculture as a separate industry under the special initiative and guidance of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. Special priority is being given to train individuals for the industry.

The Minister said various training programmes are already being conducted to develop the mariculture field. These programmes are expected to develop the industry, create more income and employment opportunities in the atolls, and contribute to the diversification of the Maldivian economy.

In his speech, the Minister emphasised the importance of women’s involvement in mariculture, adding that the government is encouraged by the participation of a female trainee among the 15 individuals who completed the recent training.

The Marine Hatchery Skills Development Programme is a programme organised by the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources twice a year. This year's first training programme was held from 26 April to 8 May in Maaniyafushi, Kaafu Atoll. A total of fifteen participants from nine regions of the country participated in the programme. Under the programme, the participants received instructions in hatchery establishment and aquaculture skills.
