April Revenue Up as Tourism-Driven Tax Collections Boost MIRA Earnings

The revenue collection in April this year increased by 22.7 percent compared to the same period last year, according to the figures released by the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA).

Statistics showed that USD 168.55 million was collected by the authority in April this year, surpassing the forecast for April by 1.6 percent. Dollar revenue during this period amounted to USD 125.09 million.

Revenue collection details for April 2025:

* Goods and Services Tax (GST) – USD 107 million - 63.4% of revenue
* Green Tax – USD14.7 million - 8.7% of revenue
* Income Tax – USD 11.45 million - 6.8% of revenue
* Airport Development Fee – USD 10.07 million - 6.0% of revenue
* Department Tax – USD 9.94 million - 5.9% of revenue
* Tourism Land Rent – ​​USD 0.61 million - 3.6% of revenue

According to MIRA, the increase in revenue in April compared to the same month last year is attributed to the higher revenue collection from tourism sector GST and Green Tax. Tourist arrivals also increased by 4.8% in March 2025, compared to the same month in 2024.

The increase in the Green Tax rate which came into effect on 1 January and the increase in airport tax revenue from December 2024 were also contributing factors, said MIRA. The authority also noted that 14.8 percent of the revenue received in January was paid by taxpayers for previous periods.
