Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef met with Tajikistan's Prime Minister Kokhir Rasulzoda to discuss expanding bilateral cooperation, focusing on climate change, sustainable development, and economic growth.
The meeting took place as Vice President Latheef attended the High-Level International Conference on Glaciers' Preservation, held in Dushanbe from 29 to 31 May. With rising global concerns over environmental degradation, both leaders identified shared vulnerabilities and explored coordinated responses.
The leaders acknowledged the Maldives' acute vulnerability to climate change, particularly the existential threat posed by rising sea levels. With both nations facing distinct environmental challenges, they reiterated their commitment to advancing joint efforts in climate resilience and sustainability initiatives, according to a statement issued by the President's Office.
Strengthening agricultural cooperation emerged as a priority at the discussions, with both sides exploring ways to reinforce existing partnerships. Tajikistan also signalled its ambitions to develop its tourism sector, recognising the Maldives' global expertise in hospitality and expressing interest in knowledge-sharing initiatives to bolster its own industry. At the meeting's conclusion, Vice President Latheef and Prime Minister Rasulzoda reaffirmed their commitment to deepening diplomatic and economic ties.
