The practical work of the development of Kudahuvadhoo Harbour Development Project in Dhaalu Atoll has officially commenced.
The project is being implemented by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company Limited(MTCC). According to MTCC, the initial phase of the project involves breakwater construction.
The project scope includes dredging of 103,122 cubic metres of the island’s lagoon and 5,545 cubic metres of entrance channel. It also involves the construction of a 180-metre breakwater, a 372-metre quay wall and a 115-metre revetment.
In addition, a 70-metre-long, 2-metre-wide bridge and a 90-metre-long, 2-metre-wide jetty will be built. The project also includes a 2,265-square-metre pavement, the installation of harbour lights, and placement of mooring buoys.
The government has awarded the project to MTCC at a cost of USD 5.4 million.
Kudahuvadhoo has a population of approximately 4,000 residents. One of the main challenges faced by the residents and visitors to the island is the space constraints at the island’s harbour. Due to the limited space of the existing Kudahuvadhoo harbour, the harbour is frequently overcrowded with fishing vessels, passenger and cargo vessels, speedboats and dinghies.
Kudahuvadhoo is among the seven islands designated by the government to be developed as regional urban centres. MTCC believes that the Kudahuvadhoo Harbour Development Project will enhance transportation and economic opportunities for Kudahuvadhoo.
