Maldives has signed three bilateral agreements with Singapore to further enhance cooperation between the two countries in key areas.
The three Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) were signed during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s ongoing official visit to Singapore.
President Dr Muizzu alongside the Prime Minister of Singapore Lawrence Wong had witnessed the signing of the MoUs during a ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Singapore.
The agreements between Maldives and Singapore include capacity building, education and environment.
The first agreement signed was in the area of capacity building. The agreement was signed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Abdulla Khaleel on behalf of Maldives while his Singaporean counterpart Dr Vivian Balakrishnan signed on behalf of the Government of Singapore.
The second agreement was signed on Cooperation in Sustainability and the Environment. The agreement was signed by Maldives’ Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim. The Singapore Government was represented by its Minister for Sustainability and the Environment and Minister in Charge of Trade Relations Grace Fu.
The third and final agreement was signed in the facilitation of higher education opportunities. The agreement with the Institute of Technical Education of Singapore was signed by the Minister of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development, Dr Ali Haider Ahmed on behalf of the Maldives government. Deputy Chief Executive Officer Goh Mong Song signed the agreement on behalf of ITE Education.
President Dr Muizzu and First Lady Saajidha Mohamed are currently in Singapore for a state visit from 29 June 29 to 2 July.
During the visit, the President will also attend a business forum and is scheduled to meet with Maldivians residing in Singapore.
This year marks the golden jubilee of formal diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Singapore. Diplomatic relations were established on 20 February 1975.
