The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has commenced the practical work of developing Fodhdhoo, Noonu Atoll’s harbour.
With a population of 504, Fodhdhoo is thriving in local tourism. While five guesthouses are operated on the island, locals and tourists alike face significant difficulties in accessing the island due to the lack of a harbour, with only a single jetty which is accessible during the western monsoon only. The residents of the island have been voicing their concern over the matter.
To alleviate their difficulties, the government has handed over the construction of the island’s harbour to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), with the practical work kicking off on Wednesday.
As part of the Fodhdhoo harbour construction project, an area of 30,648 cubic metres will be dredged to form a new harbour basin, with an additional 3,990 cubic metres dredged to create a canal. The project scope involves a 145-metre breakwater, 165 metres of revetment, a 130-metre quay wall, and a jetty measuring 123 metres in length and6 metres in width, along with a 600 square metre pavement. The project also includes the installation of navigation and harbour lights.
MTCC said the project will provide a spacious harbour for residents and visitors.
The Fodhdhoo habour construction project is worth USD 3.23 million.
Over the past 44 years, MTCC has successfully completed many infrastructural projects in different parts of the country. MTCC was established in 1980 at an important stage in the Maldives’ development journey. Since its inception, MTCC has played an important role in building the Maldives’ infrastructure development and social resources.
