The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has commenced the practical work of constructing the harbour of Fodhdhoo, Noonu Atoll.
Home to 504 residents, Fodhdhoo is thriving in local tourism. While five guesthouses operate on the island, locals and tourists alike face considerable challenges in accessing the island due to the lack of a harbour. Currently, there is only a single jetty which is usable only during the western monsoon season. The residents of the island have been voicing their concern over the matter.
To address these difficulties, the government has handed over the construction of the island’s harbour to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), with the practical work kicking off on Wednesday.
As part of the Fodhdhoo harbour construction project, an area of 30,648 cubic metres will be dredged to form a new harbour basin, with an additional 3,990 cubic metres dredged to create a canal. The project scope involves a 145-metre breakwater, 165 metres of revetment, a 130-metre quay wall, and a jetty measuring 123 metres in length and 6 metres in width, along with a 600 square metre pavement. The project also includes the installation of navigation and harbour lights.
MTCC said the new harbour will provide a spacious area for residents and visitors and improve accessibility. The Fodhdhoo harbour construction project is valued at USD 3.23 million.
Over the past 44 years, MTCC has successfully completed multiple infrastructure projects across the Maldives. MTCC was established in 1980 at an important stage in the country’s development journey.
