The Maldives Airports Company Ltd. (MACL) has commenced a critical phase of operational readiness trials for the new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA), marking a pivotal advance towards its formal opening. The initial exercises, which focused on systems used by the national airline, Maldivian, form part of a broader infrastructure validation process.
The trials are being conducted under the Operational Readiness, Airport Transfer (ORAT) programme, a framework designed to ensure full functionality of terminal equipment, services, and support mechanisms prior to inauguration. MACL has placed particular emphasis on preparing personnel for operational responsibilities, incorporating structured training into the transition strategy. The programme also accounts for procedural changes that will take place both before and after the terminal opens.
As part of this initiative, MACL employees recently completed a targeted assessment of critical systems. The inspection included a review of Maldivian's check-in procedures, boarding pass printing operations, and related information technology components housed within the new facility.
Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed took part in the exercise, becoming the first individual to complete the check-in process at the upgraded counters. Deputy Managing Directors Mohamed Lam'aan and Mujthaba Latheef joined him, along with other senior company officials.
In remarks following the trial, Shareef praised the collaborative effort and expressed optimism about the next phase of preparations. "Rest assured, this endeavour has commenced. The path forward involves the rapid arrival of aircraft and the official inauguration of this facility. Our employees are profoundly enthusiastic, embodying a robust national spirit."
MACL has confirmed its intention to inaugurate the terminal in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of Maldivian independence. Initially dedicated to international flights operated by Maldivian, the facility will later accommodate services from additional carriers ahead of the forthcoming tourist season.
