Minister Hails “Model” Foreign Policy Behind Improved Global Ties

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Abdulla Khaleel has described the current foreign policy as a “model” which has led to improved bilateral and multilateral relationships for the Maldives.

Speaking during Public Service Media (PSM) News’ special documentary ‘Minivan Dhivehi Raajje’ launching ceremony, Minister Dr Khaleel said this Administration’s foreign policy has forged closer relations with many countries, including China, India, the United States and the Arab world.

The result of closer relationships with bilateral and multilateral partners, according to the Minister, have contributed to quicker foreign assistance in areas of need for the Maldives. He urged the Maldivian people to work with the government in preserving the country’s relations with the rest of the world.

Minister Dr Khaleel reiterated that the government will build relations with any country that respects its independence and freedom of the Maldives and its people. According to the Minister, Maldives’ being elected to various international organisations and commissions in recent time is testament to the wide acceptance of the island nation’s strong foreign policy.

"Maldives has been elected as Vice-President of the UN General Assembly. We have been elected as a member of the Governing Council of the Asia and Pacific Center for the Development of Disaster Information Management for 2025-2028. We have still elected to membership positions in many others as well. Maldives will also co-chair the Commonwealth Ministerial Meeting on Small States,” he explained.

The Minister attributes the success in the multilateral arena to stronger relationships with other countries and elevated respect for the Maldives.
