Nearly 50 Percent Revenue Hike from Departure Tax, Airport Fee

Maldives has posted Over USD 110 million in revenue from departure tax and airport development fee in the first of the year - a significant increase from the same period last year.

According to the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) figures, total revenue from departure tax in the first six months of the year was recorded at USD 57.1 million - a 48 percent increase from the USD 38.6 million posted during the same period of the previous year.

Revenue from airport development fee for the first six months amounted to USD 57.4 million recording a 46 percent hike from the USD 39.3 million posted during the first half of 2024.

MIRA’s figures showed that departure tax and airport development fee accounted for 10.6 percent of total government revenue for the first six months of the year.

First introduced on 1 January 2022, departure tax is a tax levied on passengers departing from an airport in the Maldives while the Airport Development Fee is charged from every passenger departing from Velana International Airport (VIA).
