Gov’t Initiates Effort to Expand Public Works Units Nationwide

The government has initiated efforts to establish Public Works Units in every island across the country, the Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works, Adam Shareef Umar has revealed.

Public service units or public works units are tasked with construction, repair and maintenance of public infrastructure through the country with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu instructing the establishment of individual units in all Atolls of the Maldives.

In a post shared on social media, Minister Adam Shareef said in line with the President's directive, the units will be established in Atolls currently without one, with the islands already identified.

Islands where public service units will be established:

* Dhidhdhoo, Haa Alifu Atoll
* Funadhoo, Shaviyani Atoll
* Manadhoo, Noonu Atoll
* Maakurathu, Raa Atoll
* Eydhafushi, Baa Atoll
* Naifaru, Lhaviyani Atoll
* Thulsdhoo, Kaafu Atoll
* Rasdhoo, Alifu Alifu Atoll
* Mahibadhoo, Alifu Dhaalu Atoll
* Felidhoo, Vaavu Atoll
* Muli, Meemu Atoll
* Nilandhoo, Faafu Atoll
* Kudahuvadhoo, Dhaalu Atoll
* Veymandoo, Thaa Atoll
* Villingili, Gaafu Alifu Atoll

The Minister said preference was given to islands running the Atoll Council, adding that efforts to establish public works units in these islands are now underway.

Currently, public works units have been established in nine locations, including the capital Male’ City and Kulhudhuffushi City in Haa Dhaalu Atoll as well as islands in Laamu Atoll.
