MIFCO Signs Export Agreement with UK’s Princess Group to Boost Fish Trade

The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO) has signed an agreement with the United Kingdom’s Princess Group to export Maldivian fish products to the UK.

The agreement was signed on behalf of MIFCO by the company’s Chief Executive Officer Brigadier General (Retired) Farhath Shaheer, while the Princess Group was represented by its Chief Purchasing Officer, Neil Bohannon.

According to MIFCO, the agreement will facilitate long-term commercial transactions between the two groups. The Princess Group will purchase an agreed amount of frozen fish and canned fish that meet the quality of standards set out in the agreement. Additionally, the agreement will also facilitate further strengthening of fish procurement standards and further expand trade relations with the UK, said MIFCO.

The government is working hard to expand the Maldives’ fisheries sector into new international markets. Frozen and canned fish are already being exported in large quantities to foreign markets.

The government aims to triple fish production in the Maldives. To achieve this, many efforts are underway to increase the capacity of fish processing and packing facilities in the Maldives and increase production.
