The foundation stone has been laid for a major housing project in Kudahuvadhoo, Dhaalu Atoll.
The project, spearheaded by Rasheed Carpentry and Construction (RCC), involves the construction of 100 apartments, with groundwork now commencing on the first tower comprising 80 units. This project is a collaboration between Kudahuvadhoo Island Council and RCC, which RCC aims to complete within two years.
The project was launched by the Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, Dr Abdulla Muththalib during a ceremony held Thursday. Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister said this is the first time a housing project is being implemented in an area other than the capital, Male’ by a private developer.
The Minister said the government’s policy is to ensure housing for every citizen, highlighting that various housing projects are being implemented nationwide to cater to people of all social classes. The Minister said the aim of every island should be to become a prosperous island, and that Kudahuvadhoo is an example of this.
“What does it mean to be prosperous? It means the economy of the island must be able to function within the population of the island. The population and development must be balanced, business and jobs must be available, good quality education and health services must also be available,” he explained.
Speaking at the ceremony, RCC’s Chairman Mohamed Nazim said it was a historic day for Kudahuvadhoo and RCC with the commencement of a major housing project. He said Kudahuvadhoo is an important island to develop, as it is one of the islands the government has decided to develop as an urban centre.
"Kudahuvadhoo has its own airport. The government is working hard to develop these islands. The President has made clear plans to develop this island as a regional urban centre,” he said.
RCC is planning to develop 160 apartments across 2 towers in Kudahuvadhoo. Each of these towers will have two elevators. The apartments, 1200 square foot in size, will have 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
The practical work started on the first 80 apartments. Each apartment is priced at USD 97.276.26 excluding Goods and Services Tax (GST). RCC has now opened the apartments for purchase. Information on purchasing the apartment can be obtained by calling the RCC or on their website.
With a population of over 3000 people, Kudahuvadhoo has its own airport and a thriving guesthouse business.
