The Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works has urged local councils to work together with the communities to mitigate the damage caused by weather disasters.
In a statement, the Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works emphasised the importance of ensuring that the public adheres to the guidelines issued by Maldives Meteorological Service and other relevant government agencies in order to reduce incidents. The Ministry also identified the need for early preparedness to mitigate the damage caused by such hazards.
The Ministry said councils should encourage the island community to avoid travel except essential travel during the periods for which the National Meteorological Service issues alerts and advisories. It is also essential to ensure that safety measures are being taken on passengers and vehicles even during essential journeys, the statement said.
The Ministry has urged councils to take proactive measures to mitigate the damage caused during periods of adverse weather, and ensure that residents comply with weather agencies’ guidelines for the safety and security . The Ministry also urged the people to work together and take action according to the time and circumstances.
The Maldives Meteorological Service has warned that weather will continue to be unfavorable for the next four days as the western monsoon is expected to intensify. The weather is expected to be the harshest in the north and central parts of the country.
Heavy rain with thundershowers is expected in various parts of the country. Winds will be between 5 and 10 mph in the southern atolls and between 18 and 20 mph in other parts of the country. The agency has advised seafarers to be cautious during the inclement weather.
