President Dr Mohamed Muizzu met with the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, in London for wide-ranging discussions in London on key areas of focus, as part of his ongoing visit to the United Kingdom.
During the meeting, the Secretary-General reaffirmed the Commonwealth’s commitment to supporting the Maldives in advancing its national priorities.
The President highlighted the Maldives’ leadership among Small Island Developing States in advocating shared priorities on multilateral platforms. He also outlined the national vision to achieve developed country status by 2040, emphasising the importance of continued cooperation with the Commonwealth in realising this goal.
The President and the Secretary-General discussed a wide range of shared interests, including democracy and good governance, trade and investment, and the sustainable development of fisheries and tourism.
The meeting was a significant step towards strengthening the partnership between the Maldives and the Commonwealth.
