Adam Naseer Ibrahim, Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage, delivered a resolute address on Saturday, underscoring national unity and strategic foreign relations as essential pillars for safeguarding the country’s sovereignty.
Speaking at the official Independence Day ceremony, Minister Adam Naseer described unity among Maldivians as the “single most vital foundation” for the nation’s continued independence. He reflected on the arduous path to self-governance, characterised by sacrifice, careful planning, and sustained long-term efforts, culminating in the Maldives’ liberation from British protection on 26 July 1965.
That legacy, he noted, was shaped by the leadership of former Prime Minister Ibrahim Nasir, whose diplomatic consultations were instrumental in securing independence. Since that milestone, Minister Naseer said, the Maldivian state has remained steadfast in its commitment to preserving autonomy.
The minister’s remarks also addressed the role of foreign relations in maintaining sovereignty. He described diplomatic engagement as a critical component of national defence and stressed the importance of fostering unity and goodwill among the Maldivian people.
His comments echoed the priorities laid out by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who, in his inaugural address, “underscored the vital importance of national unity for preserving the independence of the Maldivian people,” Minister Naseer said. “Subsequently, he affirmed that urban development would be advanced to foster the happiness and prosperity of Maldivians.”
As the nation marked six decades of independence, Minister Naseer framed the occasion as a moment of reflection, an opportunity to honour past sacrifices and reaffirm the principles of unity and diplomacy that continue to shape the Maldives’ future.
