Ahmed Shiyam, Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, has reaffirmed Sri Lanka's pivotal role as a strategic partner in regional fisheries cooperation and maritime security, following high-level discussions held during the ongoing state visit of Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
Minister Shiyam outlined the enduring collaboration between the two Indian Ocean neighbours, particularly under the framework of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC). He highlighted joint efforts to promote fisheries development and advance the sustainable management of shared marine resources.
The minister also addressed the expansion of bilateral cooperation in areas beyond fisheries, identifying maritime safety and security as core elements of the relationship. Emerging sectors such as mariculture and broader fisheries innovation are expected to feature in ongoing dialogue, which he noted would reinforce the resilience of the Indian Ocean region.
The visit by President Dissanayake commenced on Monday and included wide-ranging consultations aimed at deepening bilateral ties. Discussions spanned trade and economic integration, alongside strategic planning for development and maritime governance.
