The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has appointed Abdulla Jameel Moosa as a High Court judge. He was sworn in at a ceremony held by the JSC on Sunday, Supreme Court Justice Abdulla Hameed administering the oath.
Abdulla Jameel Moosa holds a Bachelor of Sharia and Law with Honours from Kulliyyathul Dhiraasathul Islamiyya. He has more than 15 years of experience as a judge, serving most recently as a Civil Court judge. After resigning from the Civil Court, Abdulla Jameel was practising as a lawyer.
The High Court of the Maldives serves as the court of appeal against all decisions of lower courts and tribunals, which are not exempt from being referred to the High Court by law. The High Court also hears all cases where the Constitution or a law stipulates that the High Court is the court of first instance.
The Constitution states that High Court hears cases must be heard by a bench of an odd number of judges. Under Article 27 of the Judicature Act, the High Court consists of 11 judges including the Chief Judge.
With the appointment of Abdulla Jameel, the court now consists of Chief Judge Mohamed Faisal, Justice Mohamed Niyaz, Justice Hussain Mazeed and Justice Hassan Shafeeu, Fathmath Farheeza, Huzaifa Mohamed, Abdul Maniu Hussain, Dheebanaz Fahmy and Mohamed Shaneez Abdulla.
