Work was underway in Eydhafushi Island, Baa Atoll on Saturday to relocate underground utility pipes and cables in preparation for the proposed road project.
The road construction project was contracted to Maldives Road Development Corporation (MRDC).
Niuma Ahmed, Responsible Officer at Eydhafushi Island Council, said work is now underway to relocate and better-manage the sewage pipes, electricity cables, and other cables used by Dhiraagu and Cable TV operators, in preparation for the road project.
Citing the bad conditions of the roads, she said many difficulties will be alleviated with the road project, which will see the asphalt-surfacing of 15 roads.
The project also includes the development of a drainage system, and installation of speedbreakers and traffic signs.
3.36 kilometres of roads will be constructed under the MVR33.2 million project which was contracted to MRDC on June 16.
