The Environmental Protection Agency has imposed a fine of USD 311,343.89 on Temple Marine, owner of the yacht MY Big Fish, following a grounding incident that caused substantial damage to a coral reef in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll. The vessel, operating under the local agency Seal Maldives Yacht Support, ran aground on 28 April. It was successfully removed from the reef the following day, according to officials.
Damage to the reef was formally assessed on 4 June, when the EPA conducted a joint survey in coordination with representatives of Temple Marine. The investigation determined that approximately 187 square metres of coral had sustained significant harm.
Based on the findings, the EPA issued the fine on 4 August, citing violations under the Environmental Protection and Preservation Act. Temple Marine has been instructed to remit the full amount within 30 days of the issuance date.
Under Maldivian law, penalties for reef damage caused by vessel groundings may reach up to USD 6.49 million. In cases where compensation is not provided, the government reserves the right to pursue payment through judicial proceedings.
