MIFCO Begins Development of Fish Processing Facility in Fuvahmulah

The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO) has commenced the development of a new fish processing facility in Fuvahmulah City.

The facility will allow MIFCO to purchase fish directly from Fuvahmulah City, and is expected to begin operations before the end of this year. Once operational, MIFCO will be able to supply safely packaged fish products to the residents of Fuvahmulah City.

MIFCO is expanding its operations with the aim of strengthening the fishing industry by making it more profitable and sustainable for fishermen. Efforts are also underway to export fish directly from Addu City next month. MIFCO is also in the process of introducing value-added fish processing in Addu City this year.

As part of the efforts to increase the processing capacity of MIFCO centres, plans are also in place to upgrade the Kooddoo Fisheries Complex, including repairs to harbour roads and improvements to the local production factory.

Meanwhile, repairs and maintenance at Felivaru Cannery have now begun, while the fish purchase centre being established in Thinadhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll is scheduled to open at the end of 2026. Preparations are also underway to start purchasing tuna caught both in the northern and southern regions this year, MIFCO said.
