In a proactive move to cultivate a new generation of skilled professionals in its vital marine sector, the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources has extended the application deadline for the young fishermen training programme.
The Ministry said the deadline for the "Transforming Fisheries Sector in South West Indian Ocean Region and Maldives" (TRANSFORM) programme has been extended until 17 September.
This three-month initiative, jointly funded by the government and the World Bank, aims to ignite youth interest in fisheries by providing comprehensive training and practical experience in fishing and related activities.
Participants, limited to five young individuals, will gain invaluable technical knowledge alongside hands-on fishing opportunities, including the unique chance to work on a prominent pole-and-line skipjack tuna fishing vessel under the tutelage of Maldives’ top fishermen.
Each participant will also receive a stipend throughout the programme.
Eligibility criteria state that applicants must be under the age of 24 who are not currently registered as fishermen with the Ministry, while those under 18 must submit a parent or guardian consent letter along with their application form and ID card copy via email.
This concerted effort underscores the government's commitment to address the industry's concern over declining youth participation, seeking to revitalise the sector through education and training opportunities to secure its future.
