President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has submitted nominations for senior leadership roles within two independent commissions, initiating a formal parliamentary review of proposed appointments to the Civil Service Commission (CSC) and the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).
The nominations were introduced during an extraordinary sitting convened outside the legislature’s regular term. Each was referred to the appropriate standing committee for procedural examination.
For the Civil Service Commission, Mohamed Mujthaz has been nominated to serve as president, with Mohamed Nasih proposed for the vice president post. The vacancies follow the expiration of the terms of the previous officeholders. Nasih, who previously held the presidency of the CSC, has been re-appointed to the commission and now stands nominated for the vice-presidential role. The Committee on Independent Institutions has been tasked with reviewing both nominations.
In the case of the human rights watchdog, Mohamed Shafeeg Mahmood has been proposed for the vice president position. Mahmood, recently appointed to the HRCM, has been nominated to succeed Moomina Waheed, whose term concluded earlier this year. His nomination has been directed to the Committee on Human Rights and Gender.
Both committees are now responsible for evaluating the nominees’ qualifications and suitability ahead of a final vote in the legislative assembly.
