Ministry, MIRA Explore Stronger Partnership to Streamline Tourism Tax Collections

The Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim has met with Commissioner General of Taxation Hassan Zareer to discuss enhanced cooperation and tax collection in the nation's key tourism sector.

The high-level talks focused on streamlining tax collection, a critical component of the state's revenue.

During the extensive discussions, both the Minister and the Commissioner General stressed the importance of strengthening relationships with the tourism industry and improving the sharing of tax collection information. The goal is to ensure a robust and efficient system that maximises the state’s earnings from its largest economic driver.

The meeting highlighted plans for future collaboration between the Ministry and the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA). The two agencies will work together to support and promote the tourism industry while securing vital tax revenue.

The discussions take place as MIRA celebrates a strong collection period. In its monthly report, the authority announced a revenue collection of USD 137.5 million for August 2025, a 6.9 percent increase compared to the same month last year. Tourism-related taxes continue to be the primary source of this revenue.

The productive meeting signifies the government's commitment to protecting and growing its revenue streams, with strong partnerships between key agencies playing a central role in achieving that goal.
