The Road Development Corporation (RDC) has been awarded the contract to install a new, modern sewerage system in Manadhoo, Noonu Atoll.
The USD 4.6 million project aims to replace the island's outdated infrastructure, which has been problematic for more than a decade.
The agreement was officially signed by the Minister of State for Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, Hassan Rasheed, while RDC's Managing Director, Ibrahim Nazeem, signed on behalf of the state-owned corporation.
The project, which is scheduled for completion within 700 days, will see a full replacement of Manadhoo’s existing sewerage infrastructure. The scope of work includes the installation of a new, conventional gravity-based system, laying new sewerage pipes throughout the island, building a dedicated sewage pumping station, and installing a sewerage junction, along with the construction of a sea outfall and other necessary works.
The initiative comes following President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's announcement in July that the long-awaited project would move forward. During a community meeting in Manadhoo, the President noted that a complete overhaul was the only viable solution for the island's persistent sewerage issues.
This project marks a significant step toward improving public health and sanitation for the residents of Manadhoo.
