President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has nominated former Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Dr Aishath Rameela, for appointment to the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).
The HRCM is appointing a member as the term of the commission’s President, Mariyam Muna, comes to an end. Muna, who was appointed to the commission on 30 November 2020, will complete her five-year term on 30 November this year.
According to the law, when a seat in an independent institution becomes vacant or a member’s term expires, the President’s Office must open applications for the post. From among the applicants, the President nominates a candidate and forwards the name to the Parliament for approval.
From the applicants, the President nominated Dr Rameela for the post, whose name has now been referred to the Parliament’s Human Rights and Gender Committee for consideration.
Dr Rameela stepped down as the Agriculture Minister on 1 December last year citing health reasons.
The HRCM comprises five members. The current members are President Mariyam Muna, Vice President Mohamed Shafeeq Mahmood, and members Samau Ahmed Najeeb, Ismail Habeeb, and Ahmed Maqsoom.
