President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has formally designated the Fofalha Gau lagoon as part of Kun’burudhoo in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, following a proposal submitted by the island’s residents.
The decision, issued under Presidential Decree No. 28/2025, reflects the administration’s response to longstanding spatial constraints and infrastructural limitations on Kun’burudhoo. By incorporating the lagoon, the government aims to expand the island’s land area to support economic development and alleviate housing pressures.
This decree amends Presidential Decree No. 2/2025, dated 5 February 2025, which outlines the official list of inhabited islands within the country. The reclassification aligns with provisions under the Decentralisation Act (Law No. 7/2010), which authorises administrative adjustments to island status.
The revised list of inhabited islands has been published in the Government Gazette, formalising the inclusion of Fofalha Gau within the jurisdiction of Kun’burudhoo.
