Maldives’ Special Envoy of the President and former President, Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan, has underscored the importance of redefining tourism as a driver of regeneration, inclusion, and peace at the Global Tourism Forum Annual Meeting 2025, held in Brussels.
Speaking at the meeting, held under the theme “Redefining Tourism in a Changing World”, Dr Waheed urged global leaders to recognise tourism not merely as a measure of arrivals or profits, but as a transformative force that connects people, protects ecosystems and fosters peace.
In his address, Dr Waheed emphasised that tourism must move beyond numbers and profit margins to become a global catalyst for positive change. He underlined that tourism is about connecting people and places, not just statistics, and remains “one of the last great forces for uniting humanity” in a divided world.
Dr Waheed also reflected on the Maldives’ journey as a “Large Ocean State” committed to balancing growth with environmental stewardship. He noted that Maldivian resorts are leading by example; restoring coral reefs, adopting renewable energy, reducing waste, and engaging guests in conservation. “Visitors no longer come only for luxury; they come for meaning,” he affirmed.
Citing President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to cut one-third of emissions from energy generation by 2028 and to advance green infrastructure and ecosystem restoration, Dr Waheed reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to climate resilience.
He further underscored the importance of innovation and inclusion within the global tourism industry, calling for investments in human, ecological, cultural, and social capital. He added that regenerating ecosystems, respecting cultures, empowering communities, and creating prosperity – rather than just profits – are vital to redefining tourism.
Concluding his address, Dr Waheed urged global leaders, investors, and travellers to unite in transforming tourism into a genuine force for good. “If we act together, tourism can become one of humanity’s greatest forces for regeneration, inclusion, and peace,” he said.
Dr Waheed is currently representing the Maldives in Brussels, Belgium, at the Global Tourism Forum Annual Meeting 2025, taking place from 20 to 21 October 2025.
