Parliament Vets Non-Resident Envoy Nominee to Antigua and Barbuda

Parliament on Tuesday initiated the vetting process of the nomination of Maldives’ new non-resident Ambassador to Antigua and Barbuda.

This crucial step follows President Dr Mohamed Muizzu forwarding the nomination for parliamentary consent, a prerequisite outlined in constitutional provisions for key diplomatic postings.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has nominated veteran diplomat, Shiruzimath Sameer to the post who brings a wealth of experience to the role. Her distinguished career in the foreign service includes serving as Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs alongside significant diplomatic assignments as the Deputy Head of Mission to Germany and as the Maldives High Commissioner to Bangladesh.

Currently, she serves as the Deputy Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations, a posting that underscores her continued engagement in international diplomacy.

The referral to the Parliamentary Foreign Relations Committee is a standard procedure, ensuring thorough consideration of the nominee's qualifications and suitability for representing the nation abroad. Under the nation's governance framework, the appointment of ambassadors to foreign nations requires the President's nomination to be affirmed by parliamentary approval, thereby ensuring a robust system of checks and balances in the country's foreign policy appointments.

The committee will review Shiruzimath’s credentials before presenting its recommendation to the Parliament floor.
