Police, Integrity Commission Agree to Strengthen Ties for Enhanced Efficiency

The National Integrity Commission (NIC) and the Maldives Police Service (MPS) held a high-level meeting to discuss practical avenues for cooperation, focusing on bolstering investigative efficiency and ensuring the protection of citizens’ rights.

The strategic dialogue, led by Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen and NIC Chairman Shuaib Abdul Rahman, centered on crucial areas of synergy necessary for maintaining the rule of law. A key agenda item was establishing a streamlined mechanism for information exchange, allowing the NIC to efficiently obtain necessary data from the police and other relevant agencies while handling its ongoing investigations. Both sides stressed that closer coordination is essential to effectively uphold the rights and freedoms of the Maldivian people.

In a move to enhance professional standards across both agencies, officials agreed to work jointly on training and development initiatives. This collaboration will focus on providing specialised training to investigating staff, familiarising personnel with the operational procedures adopted by both the police and the integrity oversight body.

The delegation included Deputy Commissioner of Police Farhad Fikry and Professional Standards Command Head Assistant Commissioner of Police Ahmed Mohamed, alongside members of NIC. During the session, Commissioner Naveen offered congratulations to the newly appointed members of the NIC.

Established to reinforce the operational integrity of law enforcement agencies, the NIC is mandated to lay down rules and procedures concerning police personnel and the handling of public complaints against the service, thereby acting as a critical pillar of police accountability.
