Dr Ismail Shafeeu, the Minister of Education, has been appointed to the Executive Committee of the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) Board, a move the government has described as a diplomatic milestone and a reflection of the country’s expanding role in global education policy.
The Education Ministry characterised the appointment as a national honour and a recognition of Minister Shafeeu’s leadership and policy expertise. His selection, the ministry said, affirms the Maldives’ sustained commitment to advancing Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4), which seeks to ensure inclusive, equitable and quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
With this appointment, Minister Shafeeu joins the ranks of global education policymakers tasked with overseeing the implementation of GPE strategies. His role on the executive committee will involve shaping decisions that influence education systems across developing nations.
In addition to his executive responsibilities, Minister Shafeeu will represent the Asia and Pacific region on the GPE Board. The ministry noted that this regional mandate carries particular weight, as it positions him to advocate for inclusive and high-quality education across a diverse and often underrepresented bloc.
The Global Partnership for Education is one of the world’s largest international funds dedicated to strengthening education systems in developing countries. Through its grant-making model, the organisation supports reforms aimed at improving access, equity and learning outcomes.
The Maldives has long partnered with the GPE, which has played a central role in supporting the nation’s education sector. At present, the ministry is implementing a wide-ranging reform initiative known as the THAIBA project, funded through three distinct GPE grants.
Described by the ministry as a targeted intervention, the THAIBA project is designed to catalyse systemic change. Developed in collaboration with the GPE, UNICEF and the World Bank, the initiative aims to build a resilient, inclusive and high-performing education system in the Maldives.
