Maldives' Global Stature Has Reached Unprecedented Heights Under President Muizzu, Says Foreign Minister

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Abdulla Khaleel has asserted that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's administration has successfully elevated the Maldives' reputation and influence to an unprecedented level in the international arena, making its opinions highly valued by the world community.

Speaking on PSM News' "Hafthaa 104" programme, to mark the government's second anniversary, Minister Dr Khaleel lauded the foreign policy's success, attributing it to a steadfast commitment to national interests.

Central to this achievement, according to the Minister, is President Dr Muizzu's "Maldives First Policy," which fundamentally prioritises the interests of the Maldivian people.

"The President has explained his foreign policy in great detail to the people of Maldives. So first of all, we will work with those who provide assistance to achieve the needs of the country," he said, emphasising that this staunch approach has garnered global acceptance. The Maldives, he added, will foster close relations with any country or organisation that proves beneficial to the island nation.

Minister Dr Khaleel further highlighted that the President's robust foreign policy has fostered an unprecedented strengthening of bilateral and multilateral ties. He specifically pointed to the establishment of strong relations with key development partners like India and China, alongside closer engagements with countries in the Arab world and other nations, signifying a diversified and strategic approach to diplomacy.

The Minister also underscored the Maldives' increasingly prominent role in multilateral forums.

"Even if we look at the United Nations alone for the last two years, Maldives played the role of Vice-President at the last UN General Assembly... Today, Maldives is again the Vice-President of the UN Human Rights Council,” he remarked, showcasing the nation's enhanced participation and influence on global platforms.

High-level state visits by President Dr Muizzu and reciprocal visits by foreign leaders and ministers have been instrumental in securing vital assistance for the Maldives' most pressing needs. Minister Dr Khaleel noted successful efforts in stabilising the Maldivian economy through various investment forums held abroad and the cultivation of strategic economic relationships, aimed at attracting crucial foreign investment.

Minister Dr Khaleel also drew attention to the global commendation received for the Maldives' unwavering advocacy for Palestine on the international stage. He asserted that these efforts demonstrate to the world that the Maldives, despite its small size, stands as a champion of justice and human rights.
