ID Card Issuance commenced in Sri Lanka

Maldives has launched its overseas ID Card Issuance Services in Sri Lanka.

From November 2024, ID Card issuance is being expanded to more locations as part of government's decentralization efforts.

According to the Department of National Registration (DNR), the initiative aims to provide a faster method for maldivians residing in Sri Lanka to access ID card serives. As per DNR, The Maldivian High Commission in Sri lanka will facilitate the ID card Issuance.

While the Maldivian government is striving to make ID Card services available in countries commonly frequented by Maldivians, this is the second country outside of the Maldives where Maldivian ID cards would be issued.

Under this initative, Malaysia was the first overseas country in which ID services were inaugurated in April of this year. The government is also currently working on extending this service to maldivian residents in the United Kingdom (UK).

The government has achieved full coverage of this service throughout all the atolls in the nation this year, 3 months ahead of the expected deadline for the project.

The administration of President Dr Muizzu aims to facilitate easier access to essential services for residents living in islands, cutting costs and the time spent travelling to Male’ to access these services. This directive is a top priority of the government.
