The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has inaugurated a new fish processing facility in Fuvahmulah City, strengthening national seafood infrastructure and creating new economic opportunities for local fishermen.
The opening ceremony was led by Mohamed Muththalib, Minister of State for Fisheries and Ocean Resources. The event was attended by Farhath Shaheer, Chief Executive Officer of MIFCO; Ibrahim Hussain, Member of Parliament for Fuvahmulah South; Ismail Rafeeq; and members of the local fishing community, underscoring both the national importance of the project and its direct impact on the local economy.
The facility has been certified by the Maldives Food and Drug Authority as meeting the highest health and safety standards. According to company officials, the plant will enable residents to securely package fish, ensuring consistent product quality while allowing fishermen to maximise returns from their catch.
MIFCO began purchasing fish from Fuvahmulah in August and plans to commence direct exports from Addu Atoll within the next month. The initiative is supported by government backing and multilateral financing, with the aim of improving productivity and expanding the Maldives’ fisheries export capacity.
