On the 21st anniversary of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has praised the enduring unity of the Maldivian people as a cornerstone of the nation’s resilience and progress.
In a message on National Unity Day—officially observed each year on 26 December to commemorate the collective response to the disaster—the President reflected on the profound lessons learned from the tragedy that claimed 82 lives, left 26 missing, and displaced around 15,000 citizens.
He highlighted how communities across the archipelago came together to support displaced families, embodying values of hospitality, solidarity, and mutual care.
Emphasising the need for sustainable development and continuous emergency preparedness, President Muizzu noted that the Maldives’ strong international reputation for cooperation has significantly aided recovery efforts in times of crisis.
Reaffirming that unity is fundamental to national advancement, he stressed that shared aspirations can only be realised through collective effort and harmony. Drawing on the nation’s Islamic values, he stated that compassion, benevolence, and mutual responsibility continue to guide the Maldivian spirit in rebuilding and development.
First Lady Sajidha Mohamed echoed these sentiments in a social media message, offering prayers for the nation’s continued unity, courage, and divine protection.
