The Ministry of Social and Family Development has announced an expansion of senior citizen centres across the Maldives, with plans to establish facilities in four atolls—Laamu, Raa, Dhaalu and Shaviyani—this year.
The Minister of Social and Family Development, Dr Aishath Shiham emphasised the importance of addressing loneliness among the elderly, highlighting the need for safe, engaging spaces where seniors can socialise and participate in meaningful activities.
Currently operating successfully in Male’ and Hulhumale’, these centres host cultural events, recreational activities, and friendly competitions, fostering a sense of community.
The initiative has garnered significant support from local island councils, with 74 having expressed interest in establishing similar centres in their regions, she revealed.
Minister Aishath Shiham noted the strong collaboration between the Ministry and local councils, including training programmes to ensure effective implementation. While local councils will manage the centres in the Atolls, the Ministry will provide continuous support, she added.
The move aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to protect and empower senior citizens, ensuring their active participation in society.
