Legislative amendments necessary to consolidate multi-party democracy, says ECM Chief

Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) President Mohamed Zahid stated that in colloboration with government agencies, the commission is working to bring legislative amendments and policy changes necessary to strengthen the multi-party democratic system in Maldives.

ECM President Zahid stated that the commission’s aim is not just to hold the elections, but also to raise public awareness about the democratic system. He has outlined two phases to be carried out as part of this initiative, with both phases ongoing simultaneously.

The first phase involves working on a national-level, as the commission will work with government agencies such as the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) as well as the People’s Majlis to create a trsuted system for the people.

The second phase involves raising public awareness about the democratic system at an island level. He also stated that in collaboration with island and atoll councils, awareness sessions will be carried out to inform the public about how to partake in political activities to benefit the islands.

Furthermore, ECM President warned against defamation and spreading misinformation and inciting hate, creating divisions among people in the name of political activism. He said that action will be taken against individuals who make such remarks and violate the dignity of people as part of political activity.
